Video Aids for Class Homework

In addition to class time, training manuals, and question & answer time, Life with Fido is now pleased to offer video demonstrations to help you with your training. On this page you will find links to specific videos either created by Life with Fido or other respected professionals to help you with your class homework, or with commonly asked questions.

I have made every effort to provide detailed descriptions for the videos so you don't have to watch everything to find what you want. Of course, please feel free to check out everything and check back often, as I hope to make updates on a regular basis.

Forget what I said? Missed the demonstration? Missed the whole class? Now you can catch up, continue practice, or just plain improve your skill by observing and applying the methods to your own dog. Thanks for dropping in, and Good Luck!

Sincerely, Wendy Anastasiou, BS, CDBC, CPDT

Target Training: Harold Day 3
This is good training for distance commands and directional training. This is footage of Harold on Day 3 of training. It shows a progression of the work started on days 1 and 2, with a continuation of higher expectations and variations from a hand held target. If you are working this at home, you would do hand held for the first day only clicking and treating when the dog hits the target; you would not prompt or cue, just reward for independent choice. On the second day you would slowly begin to lower the target to the floor. You can use other objects to help you so you can remove your hand from the item. Always use the same target.

Target Training: Harold Day 4
This is footage of Day 4 target training with Harold. It is a typical representation of where most dogs can be if training is done daily at least once a day.  Harold is advancing faster than my other dogs, but they are close on his paws!

Target Training: Harold Day 8
I apologize for the poor lighting/ reflection problem of this tape. I didn't realize it until after it was filmed and you can't do over a specific training session. I thought it was important to show the growth from day 4. Harold is now going to the target on cue only and he is able execute commands at a distance as well as modifying what "Forward" means; it is no longer meaning just touch the target and return to me, it is now begining to mean remain at the target for further instructions. This is what you want.

Target Training: Harold Day 9
I kept this session short. Harold was tired and so was I; not the best time to train. A normal target training session lasts about 15 min, this one was about 8. I tried to challenge him just a little bit over day 8, but I also tried to make it easy. All dogs will have days like this. Try not to get frustrated, it is just a phase, they will move past it if you stay upbeat. Harold did manage to increase his wait time and his distance commands.

Training Wait at Doorway until cue is given to go out. This video is of 4 dogs being trained at once. The same process would apply to 1 dog, it would just be a lot faster. WARNING: this video is approx. 10 min in length.
